Links to the Community
StreetScene & Boscombe Celtic
StreetScene is the sponsor of Boscombe Celtic football club. In fact the football club was started by one of our key staff, Patrick Gormley. The aim is to provide a football club that helps people in early recovery from addiction to become more involved in the wider community through membership of a club and participation in local organised competitive sports. This gives people the opportunity to meet and mix in the wider community, gain a sense of belonging and improve their overall fitness, all of which promote continued abstinence from alcohol and drugs.
We currently have two teams in the local FA leagues, one playing Saturday and one playing Sunday, both are over subscribed, which has resulted in ex-members starting a further two teams locally. This hasn't reduced the demand for places in our teams and as a result we are starting another team on Sunday, commencing next season (2007 - 2008). People are encouraged to join from early recovery, in the later stages of treatment, or in supported accommodation, although we also encourage involvement from people who have no addiction problems in order to assist with the mixing in the wider community element of our project.
This is a support to drug treatment as it provides a further way to help people re-integrate into the community, improves their health and fitness, ands enables people to belong to a team.
A success is a player who comes to us from treatment, usually not terribly fit, who joins the team, plays regularly, improves their fitness and then continues as a regular player either for our team or another, increasing their friends both in and out of recovery and remaining clean. StreetScene sponsors some of the activities through purchasing kits and equipment, as well as assisting clients getting to and from the ground where necessary.
The Terry O'Dwyer Fishing Club
Terry was one of our Key Staff members until his sudden death in June 2006 at the age of 49. Terry was a larger than life character, dedicated to the work of StreetScene. He was always full of good ideas, and funny stories. He was a very skilled practitioner who helped countless people on their path to recovery, and many staff in the course of their training. He was the best friend you could have. The people who attended his funeral to pay their respects filled one of the largest churches in Bournemouth, even the vicar commented that he had never seen anything like it, although no one who knew Terry was surprised by the size of the turn out.
One of his main passions was fishing. Just before he died he wanted to establish a fishing club for clients. He believed in the benefit a client could get from sitting fishing for an afternoon, quietly amongst nature, away from the hustle and bustle of life and treatment. He felt that for some clients this would be a good hobby to take up for their recovery, as many people in recovery do enjoy this sport and it is important for people in recovery to find something they enjoy doing with their free time.
As a result of all this we have established the Terry O'Dwyer Fishing Club. Two of his fishing colleagues are going to run the club, showing clients how to fish and getting them to and from various locations. From donations received at the time of his death we have money to buy rods and reels and we will see how things progress from there.
